Spring in Fort McMurray: 7 Must-Do Activities in the Wood Buffalo Region
Share
Spring doesn’t always arrive quickly in Fort McMurray, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start getting ready for it! Many of us have already swapped out our winter tires, updated our wardrobes, and cleaned the barbecue in anticipation of warmer days. At Wood Buffalo Cleaning Company, we’re excited to launch our Spring Office Cleaning Promotion soon, helping you refresh your space for the season.
While we put the final touches on our new commercial office and industrial cleaning service launch, here are seven great activities to enjoy this spring in the Wood Buffalo Region:
1. Explore Birchwood Trails
Take a walk, bike ride, or even enjoy an outdoor workout at Birchwood Trails. Spanning over 400 hectares of serene parks, these trails offer a peaceful escape for both residents and visitors. Nestled in the Con Creek valley between Thickwood, Dickensfield, and Timberlea, Birchwood Trails provide excellent opportunities for walking, running, and cross-country skiing in the winter. The outdoor gym along the trail, with multiple workout stations from Cornwall Road to Woodland Drive, lets you enjoy a full fitness routine in nature.
2. Visit Wood Buffalo National Park – A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Discover one of Canada’s most remarkable natural wonders: Wood Buffalo National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is also the world’s largest Dark Sky Preserve, making it a prime location for stargazing. Located in Northern Alberta and the southern Northwest Territories, it’s a must-visit for nature lovers. Learn more and watch a video of this breathtaking destination here.
3. Learn at the Oil Sands Discovery Centre
Fort McMurray is located at the heart of the world’s largest single oil deposit—the Athabasca Oil Sands. The Oil Sands Discovery Centre offers an interactive and educational experience, showcasing the region’s history, technological advancements, and environmental efforts. It’s a great spot for families and anyone interested in learning more about Alberta’s energy industry.
4. Relax at Gregoire Lake Provincial Park
If you love the beach, Gregoire Lake Provincial Park is the place to be! Located just outside the city, this park offers opportunities for boating, barbecuing, camping, and beach volleyball. The park has undergone significant improvements in recent years, including trail upgrades, new signage, and a brand-new central facility with a convenience store, shower building, and laundry services. Expect it to be fully open for the May long weekend—weather permitting!
5. Birdwatch at Crane Lake Nature Trails
For bird lovers, Crane Lake Nature Trails offer a stunning birdwatching experience. These trails are part of Suncor’s innovative reclamation efforts, covering over 19 hectares of reclaimed land. Another fascinating stop is Wapisaw Lookout, home to the first oil sands tailings pond to be fully reclaimed. Guided tours provide insight into how new technologies are reducing the environmental impact of oil sands operations.
6. Catch a Fort McMurray Giants Baseball Game
Sports fans can cheer on the Fort McMurray Giants, a collegiate summer baseball team playing out of Shell Place in the Western Canadian Baseball League. Since their founding in 2016, the Giants have been a symbol of community pride. With games throughout the summer, it’s a great way to enjoy an evening with family and friends. #FortMacStrong
7. Golf Under the Midnight Sun
If you love golf, you’re in luck! Fort McMurray has three 18-hole golf courses set within the beautiful boreal forest. Thanks to Alberta’s long summer days, you can play well into the evening. Miskanaw Golf Club, in particular, offers a scenic and challenging course that’s perfect for golfers of all skill levels.
